Airbnb's title character limit is 50 characters, including spaces. This is a hard limit — the platform will not let you save a title longer than that. But the more interesting question is: why 50, what happens if you get close to it, and what's the format that actually works within that constraint?
50
Airbnb hard limit
Enforced at input. Airbnb blocks anything longer at the save step.
30-45
Optimal range
Top-ranked listings average 38 chars. Longer than 45 truncates on many mobile viewports.
70%
Mobile browsing share
Most Airbnb search happens on phones. A title truncated at char 42 wastes the last 8 characters.

Why 50 characters?↗
Airbnb picked 50 because that's roughly what fits on a mobile phone screen in the search results grid without being truncated. Anything longer gets cut with an ellipsis mid-word. Since ~70% of Airbnb browsing happens on mobile, a title that gets truncated at character 42 wastes the last 8 characters and looks broken.
Practically: the platform enforces 50 because the UX only reliably shows the first ~40-45. If you use all 50, mobile users see the first 42 or so and can guess what got cut. Use 40 or fewer and every character shows.
What happens if you try to exceed the limit↗
Airbnb blocks you at the input field. You get a validation error and cannot save. Same behavior on desktop and mobile. No workaround, no grace period, no way to sneak past with special characters. If you paste in 100 characters, only the first 50 register.
Some hosts try to game this with symbols, dots, or numbers to condense words ("2BR" instead of "two bedroom"). Airbnb's own guidelines discourage overuse of these — they read as promotional and hurt CTR. Use them sparingly.
The optimal length is 30-45 characters↗
Not 50. Here's why:
- 30-45 chars shows in full on every device, including small screens
- 50 chars shows in full on desktop but truncates on many mobile viewports
- Under 30 chars shows in full everywhere but often lacks specificity
Top-ranked listings average around 38 characters. That's usually enough to fit property type + one specific differentiator + a location cue.
The formula that fits in 50 characters↗
Every element competing for space in a title has an opportunity cost. The elements top-ranked hosts prioritize, in order:
- Property type — apartment, flat, loft, cabin, villa
- One specific differentiator — sunlit, near beach, rooftop, private entrance
- Location cue — nearest landmark, transit, or neighborhood
- Optional trust signal — self check-in, superhost, WiFi
Example that fits in 45 characters: "Sunlit flat near Eiffel Tower, self check-in"
Compare to a 62-character title (won't save, but if it did, would truncate): "Cozy and beautiful modern apartment in the heart of Paris" — generic adjectives, city repeat, no differentiator, cut off mid-word on mobile.
What NOT to put in your Airbnb title↗
Every character spent on the below is a character wasted:
- Your city name — already shown in the search result card below your title
- Generic adjectives — cozy, amazing, stunning, perfect, lovely (banned by Airbnb style guide, common across thousands of listings, don't differentiate)
- ALL CAPS — reads as spammy, penalized in CTR data
- Emojis — Airbnb's guidelines advise against them; some render inconsistently across devices
- Marketing fluff — "book now!", "amazing deal", "limited time" — Airbnb removes these
Do titles affect ranking?↗
Yes. Indirectly but significantly. Titles drive click-through rate (CTR) from search results, and CTR is a top-3 ranking signal Airbnb reads directly. A generic title that gets 4% CTR versus a specific title that gets 10% CTR will produce dramatically different search rankings within 7-14 days.

Booking.com title character limit↗
Booking.com's title (property name) is longer — up to 200 characters. But that doesn't mean use all 200. The same principles apply: mobile truncation, guest attention, differentiation. A 40-60 character title is optimal on Booking.com too.
Quick checklist before you save↗
- Under 50 characters (Airbnb requires this)
- Ideally 30-45 characters for full mobile display
- Property type included
- One specific differentiator
- A location cue (landmark, transit, or neighborhood — NOT city name)
- Sentence case, no ALL CAPS, no emojis
- No banned words (cozy, amazing, stunning, perfect, lovely)
